What We've Learned About the Men Who Shop at Makena Decor

A founder's perspective on intentional shopping, refined taste, and the spaces our male customers create.

Article: Something We've Noticed About Our Customers

Something We've Noticed About Our Customers

After years of working one-on-one with customers, we've noticed something unexpected about the men who shop with us—and what it says about thoughtful design.

If you asked someone who shops for decorative pillows, they'd probably picture a woman.

But over the years, we've noticed something that surprises a lot of people.

About one in every three Makena Decor customers is a man.

That statistic isn't the interesting part.

What's interesting is how they shop.

As the founder of Makena Decor, I've had the privilege of helping customers create homes they love. While every customer is different, I've noticed a few consistent patterns among many of the men who shop with us.

They Usually Know Exactly What They Want

Many of our male customers don't spend hours browsing.

They've already measured the sofa. They've considered the room. They know the size they're looking for and often have a specific color or style in mind before they ever visit our website.

They're not searching for endless inspiration. They're searching for the pillow—the one that completes the room they've already envisioned.

Once they find it, the decision is usually straightforward.

Our Conversations Are Different

One of the things I've noticed is that our conversations tend to be very practical.

The questions usually aren't:

"Which pillow do you think I should choose?"

Instead, they're more like:

"Do you have this in another size?"

"How quickly can this ship?"

"Is there another pillow similar to this one?"

They're focused on finding the right piece, getting the information they need, and moving forward.

It's a different shopping experience, and one I've come to appreciate.

They're Looking for Something Different

Over time, another pattern has become clear.

Many of the pillows these customers choose aren't the ones you'd expect to find in every furniture store.

They're drawn to rich textures, distinctive weaves, architectural patterns, and color palettes that feel refined without demanding attention.

They're not looking for another decorative pillow.

They're looking for one they haven't seen everywhere else.

That philosophy has been part of Makena Decor from the very beginning.

We believe a home should feel personal—not like it was copied from a catalog. That's why we create thoughtfully curated, limited-edition collections with distinctive fabrics, elevated textures, and timeless color palettes. Our goal has never been to offer the most pillows. It's to offer the right ones.

Why They Come Back

One of the greatest compliments we receive is seeing a familiar name appear in our orders.

Many of these customers return when they're finishing another room, moving into a new home, or looking for the next piece that completes their space.

That kind of trust isn't something we take lightly.

Design Doesn't Belong to One Person

One thing this has reinforced for me is that great design isn't about gender.

It's about creating a home that feels like yours.

Some people arrive with a clear vision. Others enjoy exploring until something catches their eye. Both approaches are equally valid, and both deserve pieces that feel thoughtfully made.

That's why we don't create collections for men or collections for women.

We create collections for people who appreciate beautiful fabrics, distinctive textures, thoughtful craftsmanship, and homes that feel finished.

The Collected Edit

As we've watched purchasing patterns over the years, certain pillows continue to stand out.

Not because we selected them for this collection.

Because our customers did.

The twelve pillows below have been chosen again and again by our male customers. They earned their place here through distinctive textures, timeless color palettes, thoughtful craftsmanship, and designs that help a room feel complete without overpowering it.

Whether you're furnishing your first home, refreshing a favorite room, or searching for the finishing touch, we hope you'll find a piece that feels just as at home in your space.

designer tip

Layering doesn't have to mean adding more. Start with one pillow that introduces texture — a woven geometric or a rich velvet — then pair it with a complementary pattern in a similar color family. Keeping the palette to two or three tones creates depth while maintaining a clean, intentional look.
