Sheesh — who knew starting a luxury pillow business would be this much work?

Makena Decor is a true labor of love. And I mean that in every sense of the word. The late nights, the research rabbit holes, the decisions that felt monumental and the ones that turned out to be smaller than I thought — all of it has been equal parts humbling and exhilarating.

Why Pillows?

Because pillows are the punctuation mark of a room. They’re the detail that pulls everything together — or the thing that’s quietly off and you can’t figure out why. I’ve always believed that a well-styled home doesn’t require a full renovation or a designer budget. Sometimes it just takes the right pillow in the right place.

I wanted to create a brand that made that kind of intentional, elevated styling accessible. Not mass-market. Not disposable. Pieces that feel considered, that last, and that make you feel something when you walk into a room.

The Journey

Starting Makena Decor meant turning over a lot of stones — and then turning them over again. Sourcing quality fabrics. Understanding what it means to build a brand with integrity. Learning the business side of something I was deeply passionate about. There were moments I wasn’t sure when we’d hit “send” on launching. But every step forward confirmed we were building something worth the wait.

We’re a Black-owned small business, and that identity is woven into everything we do — from the care we put into each product to the community we’re building around intentional home design.
